The new Samsung 8 and 8 plus, released date tomorrow 28th April, is making an impressive visual impact with its edge to edge display and omittance of the home button.

The screen size, taking up to 80% of the phone’s front, is 5.8in (S8) and 6.2in (S8 plus), with the resolution at the highest it’s ever been: 2,960 x 1,440. Similar to LG, Samsung has also shifted to a much taller phone to allow for more content to be displayed at once. They have successfully managed to make a really large screen phone that doesn’t feel big or bulky — with its depth 1.5 millimetres slimmer than its predecessor.

Instead of the home button, the S8 has a virtual touch sensitive button on the bottom. You can also unlock the phone with either your retinas or by scanning the whole of your face, replacing the biometric fingerprint reader. An entirely new button, which has been added on the left side, just below the volume rocker, is for its new smart assistant Bixby — which will be both for the S8 and Samsung’s whole ecosystem of connected devices moving forward.

Bixby will be more than just home assistance, and Samsung is making it clear they are hoping it will be the start of something much bigger. Unlike a majority of its competitors, Samsung’s has plenty of its own brand name appliances to help build the smart home automation process.

Samsung has worked hard to smooth over last year’s Note 7 disaster by turning their experience into something to learn from.

The overall verdict on the S8 is that it is ambition but not overly so. Its design is an expected evolution over previous generations, while it’s new feature, Bixby, feels like an exciting new feature for what’s to come.

ROP for the S8 is set at £689.00 and £779.00 for the S8 plus with colour options of either Midnight blue or Orchid grey.
