Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (aka SMTP) is the industry-standard method for sending emails. It acts as a delivery system that transfers messages from systems to the recipient email provider. It’s straightforward, robust, and universally supported. SMTP Authentication (aka SMTP AUTH) is an extension of this that requires senders to use valid credentials to send emails. This added security ensures only authorised users can send messages – and pretty much all SMTP setups require SMTP AUTH.
SMTP Email is increasingly necessary if your systems don’t support other methods of sending emails. Top tier providers are reducing or even removing access to SMTP. With Google’s announcement and Microsoft’s announcement that they will retire Basic Authentication – the outdated method relying on usernames and passwords – for SMTP, ensuring continuity for your systems is critical. Google has depracated Basic Authentication as of mid 2025, and we have further information available here on Microsoft’s depracation.
Since 2022 (Microsoft) and 2024 (Google), Basic Authentication has been gradually phased out due to its vulnerabilities to credential theft, phishing, and brute-force attacks. So providers are moving to Modern Authentication using OAuth 2.0, which grants access through temporary keys (tokens) rather than stored credentials. While Modern Authentication is more secure, your existing website, app, software, or device may not support this new standard. Our solution can seamlessly replace your current setup without needing to change your systems.

Fair usage restrictions apply, e.g. not exceeding 1,000 emails per batch and/or not more than 10 emails per second.
