The White House has not only been preparing for the many physical transitions which come with a new President, the first ever Digital Transition will take place on the 20th January 2017.

President Obama, the first “social media President”, and his staff carefully constructed his digital entity and now the digital material created on it, will be wiped clean to become ready for the new President.

The President’s digital material will be wiped clean and archived, just as any hard copy would be. Obama’s @POTUS tweets will be transferred over to a new account, @POTUS44, and this and all digital material ie. Facebook, Snapchat etc, will be handled by the National Archives and Records Administration. His staff also plan to have his social media material ready for download, so it’s easy for anyone from the public to access.

Transferring and transitioning digital material is something that many individuals, businesses and companies are starting to have to deal with for the first time. It’s something that many of us have never had to think about before and like the White House, have to come up with a digital transitioning strategy and policy for the first time.
