Apple’s Safari decided in February that it would start to only allow one year certificate validity for SSL/TLS certificates. Now, it is announced that Google Chrome will be joining Safari in one year certificates.
Google has been campaigning for shorter certificate validity for years, but has always accepted the industry standard validity of up to five years. Google has announced it too is making the switch to a validity period of 398 days (equivalent to a year) for SSL/TLS certificates, which will come into effect on September, 1st with Apple’s Safari.
This change will bring more security as certificate keys will need to be rotated more frequently, with the most recent/up to date information being used. Those needing SSL certificates will need to regularly make sure that a certificate is in place for their website.
After September 1st, you will still be able to buy up to 5 year certificates through subscription packages, however the certificates themselves will need to be reissued each year.
We provide SSL certificates and can manage these for you with expiration reminders. For more information and pricing please contact us.
