Changes to the Google Maps Platform style

Google has made changes to their Maps platform’s default colours and style. The updates to the platform and API bring colour palettes in line with those already visible in the Google Maps consumer app (following updates in autumn 2023).
The changes were initially implemented on 18 March 2024, with further updates to “map experiences and usability” to be rolled out over the next 12 months, according to Google’s announcement.
You can choose to opt out of these changes for now, although the old default colours will no longer be available after 18 March 2025. We recommend that you confirm compatibility and styling before the automatic migration next year, even if you choose to opt out in the meantime. You can also opt in sooner if you are happy your site or app is working with the new defaults.
From 21 March 2024, maps implemented using map IDs will be the first to be updated to the latest version. If styling is crucial for your site or app, Google recommends previewing, opting in, and then customising to your specific requirements.
