Microsoft now offers the ability for you to move your data to your chosen location geographical datacenter.
Organisations can now choose to move their data hosted by Microsoft 365 to their own region, thus adding further information governance compliance (including terms set by the GDPR). This is in contrast with recent complaints against Google, who have moved UK data to the US, following the UK’s exit from the EU. The new datacenters add capacity and will support ongoing customer demand and usage growth, although they offer no new features or capabilities.
That data concerned includes: Exchange Online mailbox content, SharePoint Online Content, OneDrive files, and Teams chat messages. New customers will automatically have their core customer data stored in an appropriate regional datacenter for their location.
Existing customers are not impacted however, Microsoft are offering existing customers, in the below countries, the option to request early migration of their core customer data to a new datacenter, before the listed request deadline.
Data moves can take up to 24 months to complete, following a request. Data moves are a back-end operation, with minimal impact to end-users, and at no additional cost.
