Twitter Turns 10 Years Old

Twitter has recently turned 10 years old!? Where has the time gone.
Starting as a social tool to broadcast personal status updates, the social platform has become so much more. To our conversations with other users around a common keyword, these have amplified the key moments in our recent history than ever before.
As Twitter evolved, developers introduced the ‘@’ to reply, ‘#’ to tag keywords, and the ‘retweet’. The hashtag has become somewhat of a generation-defining symbol and most probably if it wasn’t for Twitter, it might not exist in the way it does today — as whether you love or hate the hashtag is mostly dependent on your year of birth!
Defining moments in our recent history have kept the global community in contact and up-to-date with the latest gripping developments, such as the —
- Paris attacks in November 2015 #JeSuisParis
- #BlackLivesMatter protests in the USA
- Pro-democracy protests of the #ArabSpring
With these and other trending topics, Twitter has captured the pulse of nations and the world.
Over the last quarter though Twitter, for the first time, has seen a decline in its active users and are no longer profitable. Since putting a block stopping outside developers in 2012, Twitter has not have progressed in the way it had been previous to that time.
Also, if you are not familiar with the platform, you may still be wondering, “what is a hashtag and how do I use it?” or “what is a tweet?”. Showing that they have not found a way to reach new, or cross generational users, as Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest has.
Hoping to re-inspire its users and save itself from more criticism, the person in charge of their founding vision is back in the position of CEO. With this shift back to how their beginning, they hope to gain pace and the prosperity they enjoyed in their early years.
A decade on, Twitter is today a much more significant and influential company than it possibly projected to be at the start. Many of the world’s most historical events have played out live over its world wide forum — making it one of the most informative social platform tools to date.
