Zoom has announced that it plans to offer end-to-end encryption (E2EE) to all its users, not just those with paid subscriptions.

This comes after security concerns and complaints were raised regarding Zoom’s platform, during the massive uptake in usage of the service due to working-from-home requirements.

Zoom now faces a lawsuit for previously exaggerating their privacy standards in their marketing, and for failing to disclose that the service was not truly end-to-end encrypted.

A petition for better security on the platform was signed by 20,000 people, from Mozilla and the EFF, although this only represents 0.006 of the platform’s daily participants.

Some users may object to using the new E2EE as an additional piece of information to validate identity, such as a phone number, needs to be given.

Zoom encryption is planned for July as an early beta phase, with no timeline set beyond that as yet.
