Microsoft completes largest ever email migration for the NHS

Microsoft has recently completed the world’s largest email migration.
This six-month project involved moving 2.1 million mailboxes for the NHS. Every day, around 22,000 NHS email accounts were transferred to Microsoft’s Azure cloud, which rose to 83,000 at the weekend. This resulted in 2.3 petabytes of data being moved from local servers to Microsoft Azure.
NHS Digital, the technology arm of the NHS, has been working closely with Microsoft in recent years to move staff onto modern software and operating systems. As a response to COVID-19, Microsoft signed an agreement with the NHS to deploy Microsoft 365, including Teams which was noted as a huge benefit. Notwtihstanding, the NHS is not beholden to Microsoft and aims to work with other big providers such as Google, Amazon and Apple.
The NHS now represent the single largest Microsoft 365 account Microsoft has in the enterprise space. This move highlights the NHS’s wider ambitions to be up-to-date and compliant with the latest technology enhancements.
