macOS 12 Monterey is Apple’s new operating system, the successor to macOS 11 Big Sur, and is now available to download.

This new version adds greater support for the latest M1 Processor and brings new features to Macs. Some features of Monterey, however, will only be available on devices with an M1 processor, and are due to be released later this year.

Most Apple devices post 2015 are compatible. An update will show automatically on your machine if your device meets the requirements. The new MacBook Pro 16-inch and 14-inch launched this Monday with macOS 12 Monterey pre-installed.

Monterey includes some exciting features, such as Universal Control which allows one to switch easily between an iPad and Mac. Using the same mouse/trackpad, users can drag files onto the other device without any setup needed. SharePlay allows sharing over the phone, such as watching a film or listening to music together. SharePlay is available on iOS 15 and will be on Monterey later this year. Other classic features have been updated and improved such as FaceTime, AirPlay and Shortcuts.
