Today, 31 March, is World Backup Day, an initiative intended to remind us of the importance of protecting data and reviewing backup practices.

It began as an awareness campaign in 2011 and is now an annual fixture in the tech calendar, aiming to encourage both individuals and organisations to back up and protect data. Data loss can occur for a wide variety of reasons, from hardware failures to accidental deletion to cyber attacks, and backup solutions should be in place to guard against these.

As we increasingly rely on large cloud platforms and services – such as Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace – backup strategies need to evolve to match environments. Protecting emails and files is still important, but there’s also a need to safeguard the wider infrastructure that supports access to those services. This includes identity platforms, such as Microsoft Entra ID. These systems are becoming a key target for cyber attacks.
