Microsoft has recently introduced a new feature for the company’s cloud storage service, OneDrive. The new feature will allow you to access your files without taking up device storage. Called “Files On-Demand,” the update will roll out with the Windows 10 Creators Update and will give users more control over which files are stored locally versus the cloud.

Much like Dropbox’s Smart Sync, it lets you view all files and folders directly in File Explorer, instead of only seeing those you’ve synced to your device.

It’s an important update as the more we use online storage — creating files and uploading photos and working across multiple devices, the more we need to access all documents on multiple devices.

OneDrive’s File On-Demand supports personal and work accounts, as well as SharePoint Online team sites. Also, files will not only be visible from a desktop but also in the file picker when using a Windows store application — and allows you to view a files’ status due to the small cloud icon in a column labelled “status”.

On mobile, Files On-Demand has seen some issues. Microsoft has addressed this by introducing a new option to save entire folders to your mobile device — in order to open their files once you have a connection again.

Files On-Demand is already available on Android Office 365 Personal and Home subscribers and OneDrive business accounts. iOS users will receive the update in a few months.

For iOS users, you can now use OneDrive with iMesssage — sharing an entire folder or file directly within the iMessage interface.

Last Friday the 12th May, a new wave of ransomware known as “WannaCryptor” spread across the globe taking advantage of a security vulnerability found on 200,000 computers in more than 150 countries.

Once a PC is infected, all files are encrypted by the ransomware and locked behind a paywall, forcing the user to comply or risk losing their files.

In the wake of the attack, Microsoft released a critical Windows update to all operating systems. They urged customers, including those on the unsupported systems such as Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows Server 2003, to apply the MS17-010 hotfix update as soon as possible.

The ransomware mainly affected XP systems, which some industries are almost forced to still use due to custom/proprietary software and integrations, e.g. specialist medical equipment — hence the NHS being so impacted.

Some of the disruptions were due to places turning off their systems to prevent infection, rather than them actually being infected. With ransomware, this is the best protection. For businesses and mission-critical data, we recommend a multi-tiered backup solution.

As mentioned, Microsoft has released a patch, despite them ceasing all support for Windows XP. You can find the patch here — technet.microsoft.com/ms17-010, and we advise to upgrade to their latest operating system, Windows 10. We also strongly advise using extreme caution when opening email attachments.

The holding site for the Creative Circle Foundation has launched. We put together and launched the holding site in a matter of a few hours as the site was urgently needed.

Starting in September 2017, The Creative Circle Foundation will educate 20 creative students each year and relieve them from the pressure of affording expensive advertising courses. The foundation also plans to assist a number of students from outside of London to live and afford the ever-increasing rents in and around London.”

Instagram have given their mobile website a massive upgrade which adds core features of the main app, including photo sharing and a toned down version of the Explore tab.

Until now, users could only browse, like, follow, search and see notifications on the stripped-down mobile website and desktop site. In March, Instagram added sharing from mobile web, and the Explore tab is also rolling out on there now. Features that are still missing on the mobile web are video uploads, filters, Stories, and Direct Messaging.

Instagram.com (accessed from mobile) is designed to be a web experience optimised for mobile phones. Its design is to help people have a fuller experience on Instagram no matter the device or network they are on.

Other product updates included with their global growth strategy, include web signup, better onboarding flow for low end Android users and offline functionality.

There is a phishing scam on the loose at the moment that is disguising itself as a Google Doc invite to view email.

Countless unsuspecting email users have been impacted with the main target at the moment seeming to be journalists. Reporters from Buzzfeed, Hearst, Vice and New York Magazine are receiving convincing emails inviting them to view a Google Doc file — and the email even matches Google’s recent redesign.

The Google.com URL is also worryingly very real looking — after clicking on the link, the page invites you to choose which account you’d like to use to view the Google Doc, and then you’re taken to a page that invites you to grant access to your Google Account.

If you receive an email which looks like the one above, delete it immediately.

Even though this phishing scam is very sophisticated, there are still usually some telltale signs to check for —

• Look who the email is addressed to, often this doesn’t look right.
• The email itself is not quite look like a genuine Google email.
• Check twitter to see if anything has been reported.
